Finely carved from a well-polished celadon jade of even tone with minor inclusions, the circular bi-disc surmounted by an openwork depiction of a phoenix, its long beak curling down towards the disc and its wings finely incised with feathery details. The bird’s elegantly scrolling tail feathers extend fluidly along the perimeter of the disc, accentuating the form with a lively sense of movement. The reverse similarly worked with a phoenix motif in mirror image.

This exquisitely carved piece exemplifies the refinement of Qing dynasty jade craftsmanship, where archaic ritual forms such as the bi-disc were combined with auspicious motifs like the phoenix to convey wishes for prosperity and harmony.
