Finely carved in the round as Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, shown seated in a relaxed pose with one leg pendent, the other drawn up, her right arm resting gently upon the raised knee. The face is serene and softly modelled, with downcast eyes conveying a calm, introspective expression. The hair is arranged in an elaborate coiffure beneath a high crown, centred by a small seated effigy, and flanked by pendulous earrings.

She is richly adorned with layered necklaces, armlets and a knotted sash, the flowing robes draped naturally over the body, their folds carefully articulated. Traces of original polychrome and surface pigment remain throughout, now worn and softly patinated, enhancing the sculpture’s devotional character and age.

The reverse is fully carved, with the robe falling in broad, naturalistic folds across the back, confirming the figure was intended for viewing in the round rather than as an architectural element.

Large-scale wooden figures of Guanyin from the Qing dynasty are increasingly rare, particularly examples retaining their original sculptural integrity and traces of early surface decoration. The relaxed lalitasana-inspired posture reflects late imperial tastes, combining devotional function with refined aesthetic appeal.
