Superbly modelled in blanc-de-chine porcelain, the figure of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, is shown seated in royal ease on swirling waves, with one arm resting gracefully upon a scholar’s table supporting a sutra scroll. The goddess wears long flowing robes and elaborate beaded necklaces, her hair arranged in a high chignon and falling in long strands over the shoulders. At her side stands a small acolyte, rendered with a joyful expression and clasped hands.

The glaze is a pure ivory-white, characteristic of Dehua porcelain, with a soft lustrous sheen and subtle pooling in the recesses, enhancing the depth of the modelling. The reverse shows careful finishing, and the underside remains open, consistent with traditional kiln practices.

Figures of Guanyin from the Dehua kilns of Fujian were particularly prized during the Kangxi reign, exported widely to Europe where they became treasured objects of devotion and connoisseurship. Comparable examples are preserved in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
