A SEATED FIREGILT BRONZE STATUE OF AMITAYUS CHINA 18TH CENTURY QING DYNASTY

Dimensions: Height 17,5 cm Wide 11 cm Depth 8cm

Weight: 1564 grams

Finely cast gilt-bronze figure of Amitayus, the Buddha of Infinite Life, shown seated in vajraparyanka posture upon an elevated rectangular throne. The hands are held in dhyāna mudrā, the gesture of meditation, originally intended to support the vessel of longevity. The deity is depicted with a serene expression, downcast eyes, and softly modeled facial features, conveying calm and benevolence.

Amitayus is richly adorned with a foliate crown centered by a jewel, elaborate earrings, necklaces, armlets, and bracelets. The upper body is draped with a sash crossing the torso, while the lower garment falls in gracefully modeled folds over the legs. The throne is decorated with scrolling floral motifs and stylized supports, reflecting the refined ornamental vocabulary of Qing dynasty court-influenced Buddhist bronzes.

The surface retains extensive gilding, with areas of wear and rubbing to the high points, particularly on the torso, crown, and edges of the base. The reverse shows traces of red pigment within the recessed areas of the base, consistent with traditional Chinese finishing practices.

Condition:
Overall good condition with wear to gilding, minor abrasions, and surface patina consistent with age and devotional use. No apparent restorations.

Note:
Seated gilt-bronze figures of Amitayus were widely commissioned during the Qing dynasty for temples and private devotion, reflecting the popularity of longevity cults at the imperial court. Examples of this quality and preservation remain sought after by collectors of Chinese Buddhist art.
