Finely painted in ink and colours on silk, depicting the Daoist immortal Lü Dongbin seated beneath a gnarled pine on a rocky outcrop, holding a scroll and gazing pensively. To his side rests a stack of books and a teapot, and above hangs his iconic double-edged sword suspended from a branch. The painting captures the scholarly, reclusive aspect of Lü Dongbin, one of the revered Eight Immortals of Daoism.

Lü Dongbin is perhaps the most famous of the Eight Immortals. He is traditionally portrayed as a scholar or recluse with a long beard, often carrying a sword to dispel evil spirits and a fly-whisk symbolising spiritual refinement. The books and tea accoutrements emphasise his erudition, while the mountain setting evokes withdrawal from worldly affairs in pursuit of enlightenment.
