(R) A CHINESE BLUE&WHITE EXPORT DISH, CHINA 18TH CENTURY WITH KANGXI MARK

Dimensions: Height 6 cm Diameter 38 cm

Weight 1578 grams

The dish is finely potted with a broad, gently rounded cavetto and a slightly everted rim. The interior is richly decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, centred by a stylised lotus bloom encircled by scrolling foliage, enclosed within a lobed medallion. This central motif is surrounded by radiating panels alternately filled with floral sprays and foliate motifs, divided by diaper-patterned borders, creating a well-balanced and rhythmical composition characteristic of Chinese export wares of the period.

The reverse is similarly adorned with scattered floral sprigs around the exterior rim, while the base bears a Kangxi mark within a double circle, executed in underglaze blue. The palette displays the varied tonalities of cobalt typical of 18th-century production, ranging from soft washes to darker, more saturated outlines.

Such blue and white export dishes were produced in large quantities for foreign markets, particularly Europe, where they were prized for both decorative display and table use. While bearing a Kangxi mark, the present example reflects later 18th-century craftsmanship, drawing upon earlier Kangxi-period designs that remained highly influential well into the Qing dynasty.
