This delightfully carved wooden netsuke depicts a chubby, seated child holding a rattle-like object (possibly flower bunches or bells) pressed to the side of his smiling face. The figure is rendered with a round, highly expressive face, deeply incised smile lines, and closed eyes lifted in mirth. The child’s voluminous cheeks and short limbs emphasize innocence and playfulness, while the carving conveys a joyful, almost theatrical gesture.

The back is smooth and gently rounded, with minimal surface ornamentation, allowing the form to rest comfortably in the palm. Underneath, two cleanly drilled himotoshi pass through the base of the legs, discreetly placed and smoothed from handling.

Excellent condition. Deep reddish-brown patina throughout, with minor handling wear. One toe features a contrasting colour that appears repaired. Himotoshi are intact and smoothly finished. The carving remains crisp and expressive.
