Each bowl of deep rounded form rising from a short straight foot to a fluted, gently lobed rim, the exterior painted in brilliant cobalt blue with birds perched amongst flowering peonies, prunus and rockwork, interspersed with butterflies. The interior with a central peony spray and a continuous band of stylised diaper and ruyi-head motifs incorporating endless knots below the rim. The bases left unglazed.

This finely executed pair typifies the high-quality blue-and-white wares produced at Jingdezhen during the Kangxi reign, noted for their crisp cobalt tones and lively naturalistic painting.
