The ovoid body rises from a short foot to a rounded shoulder and a short neck, fitted with its original domed cover surmounted by a knop finial. The surface is covered with a rich green lead glaze, now partly degraded and iridescent, stopping short above the foot to reveal the buff ware. Areas of glaze loss and calcification testify to long burial.

Green-glazed wares of this type were produced during the Tang dynasty as tomb furnishings (mingqi), embodying wealth and status in the afterlife. The bold monochrome glaze, derived from lead-based pigments with copper oxides, represents one of the earliest developments of Chinese coloured glazing and a precursor to the celebrated sancai tradition.
