(R) A CARVED AND GILT WOOD RELIEF PANEL WITH FIGURAL SCENE, CHINA, CIRCA 1850

Dimensions: Height 18 cm Wide 120 cm Depth 4 cm

Weight 2745 grams

Elongated wooden relief panel, finely carved in high and low relief with an animated narrative scene populated by numerous figures arranged within an architectural and landscape setting. Scholars, officials, attendants, warriors, and musicians are shown in lively interaction beneath stylised pine trees and within pavilion structures, creating a continuous panoramic composition.

The figures are carved with expressive gestures and varied postures, their robes articulated with deep folds and rhythmic movement. Architectural elements such as balustrades, tiled roofs, and gateways punctuate the scene, lending spatial depth and guiding the viewer’s eye across the length of the panel. The surface retains remnants of gilt and polychrome decoration against a red ground, enhancing the visual richness and emphasizing key details.

Such panels were typically used as decorative elements in interiors, possibly as architectural friezes, altar backings, or furnishings, reflecting the late Qing taste for densely narrative historical or literary scenes. The carving demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship, combining technical skill with storytelling clarity.
