A finely carved openwork jade bi disc, China, Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 220). The disc is worked from a translucent jade of mottled celadon to honeSavey-brown tone, the surface bearing extensive alteration consistent with long burial. The circular form is pierced with an openwork design of intertwined mythical creatures, likely chilong dragons, rendered in fluid, scrolling contours and framed by a narrow outer ring incised with archaic scroll motifs. The upper section is surmounted by a sculptural openwork crest composed of confronting animal forms, further enhancing the vertical emphasis of the composition.

The carving displays the characteristic Han dynasty synthesis of archaic symbolism and lively sculptural movement. The bi disc, traditionally associated with heaven, ritual, and elite burial practice, here reflects the period’s fascination with transformation, immortality, and protective imagery.
