Modelled standing foursquare on a pierced rectangular base, the mythical beast is shown with its head turned sharply to the side, the mouth open in a ferocious snarl revealing fangs and a curled tongue. The muscular body is powerfully rendered, decorated with applied spiral curls along the mane and shoulders, and with a stylised cub clambering up the flank. The surface is covered in a vibrant sancai glaze of emerald green, amber, ochre and cream tones, pooling naturally around the relief details and base.

Such lively and boldly coloured ceramic guardian figures were produced during the Kangxi period for architectural and decorative use, drawing on long-established Ming traditions while displaying the renewed technical confidence and expressive modelling characteristic of the early Qing.
