This richly detailed thangka, executed in gilt on a dark ground, illustrates episodes from the life of Śākyamuni Buddha. At the center, the Buddha is shown seated in bhūmisparśa mudrā (earth-touching gesture), within a halo and mandorla of scrolling cloud forms. Surrounding him are narrative vignettes depicting key events, including the Buddha’s birth, renunciation, enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree, teaching at Deer Park, miracles performed during his life, and ultimately his parinirvāṇa, shown in the lower section with the Buddha reclining between two trees, mourned by disciples and celestial beings.

The composition is densely filled with subsidiary figures of monks, devotees, and deities, arranged within temple pavilions, mountain landscapes, and swirling cloud formations. The fine use of gold against a black background creates a luminous, almost icon-like effect, while accents of red, green, and white pigments highlight key details. The thangka is mounted in a traditional silk brocade frame of blue, red, and yellow, patterned with auspicious symbols and floral motifs.

Such narrative thangkas were important didactic tools, allowing practitioners to contemplate the Buddha’s path and cultivate devotion. The gilt-ground technique, with its jewel-like brilliance, reflects the high level of artistry achieved in 18th-century Tibetan workshops, likely produced under monastic patronage.
