Deeply carved from dense ironwood, each figure represents a ferocious Buddhist guardian lion (shi), or “Fo Dog,” shown with bulging eyes, curling manes, and open jaws baring fangs. One lion clasps a brocade ball beneath its paw, carved with intricate floral patterns, while the other restrains a small cub, symbolising protection and generative power. Both figures are surmounted by dynamic cloud scrolls and auspicious emblems, including endless knots and large coin motifs, carved in high relief at the top.

The carving is highly detailed, with spiraling curls, textured brows, and sinewy limbs emphasizing the supernatural vitality of the creatures. Their aggressive stances and fearsome visages embody their protective role, traditionally positioned at temple entrances to ward off evil spirits and ensure prosperity.

The use of ironwood (also known as tieli mu), extremely hard and durable, indicates these sculptures were intended for architectural or ritual use, able to withstand centuries of exposure. Remnants of old patina and wear attest to their long devotional history.
