(R A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE BRUSH POT, BITONG WITH QIANLONG MARK (1736 - 1795) QING DYNASTY

Dimensions: Height 18 cm Wide 19 cm Depth 19 cm

Weight 1982 grams

The cylindrical brush pot finely enamelled in the famille rose palette, the exterior rendered in trompe-l’œil imitation of reddish-brown wood grain (faux-bois), framing rectangular reserves. The reserves alternately painted with finely detailed landscape scenes depicting scholars and attendants in riverside pavilions amid rocky outcrops, trees, and distant mountains, and with vertical calligraphic inscriptions, all executed in delicate polychrome enamels on a white ground.

The interior glazed white, the base with a recessed foot and bearing a six-character underglaze blue seal mark, consistent with the Qianlong period. The refined painting, careful balance between pictorial and calligraphic reserves, and the sophisticated faux-wood decoration reflect the tastes of the imperial and literati milieu of the 18th century.
