A finely cast bronze opium weight in the form of a stylized lion, standing alert on a square base with rounded edges. The figure displays the typical features of Burmese weights of the 18th century, with a pronounced arched tail curving upward, a large rounded body, and a boldly rendered face showing a wide mouth and raised snout. The surface has developed a dark patina with traces of reddish and green encrustation, consistent with age and long use.

Lion-shaped opium weights, known locally as chinthe, were employed as standardized measures in Burma, particularly during the Konbaung period. Weights of one viss (approx. 1.6 kg) were commonly used in trade, especially for precious materials. The lion symbolized strength and guardianship, making it an auspicious form for such utilitarian objects.

These weights not only served as practical tools in commerce but also embodied cultural and symbolic value, linking trade with protective iconography.
