(R) BUDDHA HEAD SANDSTONE KHMER LOPBURI 13TH CENTURY

Dimensions: Height 26 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 20 cm
Weight: 13.151 grams with base

Carved from fine-grained sandstone, the head depicts the Buddha with a tranquil expression, downcast eyes beneath arched brows, and a faint smile conveying inner serenity. The ushnisha is rendered with rows of snail-shell curls, surmounted by a smooth domed top. The elongated earlobes, remnants of red pigment, and the softly modeled contours of the face reflect the influence of the Khmer Lopburi style, which flourished in central Thailand under the cultural and artistic influence of the Khmer Empire.

The Lopburi style is notable for combining Khmer features with developing Thai aesthetics: broad facial proportions, subtle modeling, and a meditative calm that anticipates the later Sukhothai style. Heads such as this would have formed part of a full standing or seated Buddha image enshrined in temple sanctuaries
