The four-armed Vishnu lies on the coiled seven-headed snake Ananta (Shesha), which spreads its hood over the god. In his other hands is a conch shell (shankha) and chakra, a lotus grows out of his navel, on which the three-headed Brahma sits enthroned; Vishnu's legs and feet are massaged by his two wives Lakshmi and Bhu Devi. Behind Vishnu is an archway with a kirtimukha mask at the top.

At the end of a cosmic age (kalpa), Vishnu sleeps on the serpent Ananta in the middle of the ocean of milk and waits for the time when Brahma will recreate the cosmos. When Vishnu awakens, a lotus springs from his navel and Brahma sits on it. Lakshmi massages his leg as if to help Vishnu wake up. Brahma will recreate the world and usher in a new cosmic age.
