(R) A RARE BLUE AND WHITE DISH, CHINA, KANGXI PERIOD, 1700

Dimensions: Height 4,5 cm Diameter 38,5 cm

Weight 1386 grams

Porcelain, finely painted in underglaze cobalt blue. The centre delicately decorated with a continuous river landscape scene depicting a pavilion set beside water beneath a gnarled pine tree, accompanied by flowering plants, rockwork and a fenced bridge in the foreground. The scene enclosed by a narrow scrolling border. The wide rim ornamented with alternating floral and diaper-pattern panels, interspersed with stylised scrollwork. The reverse plain, covered with a pale bluish glaze, with an unglazed footring.

The painting is executed with exceptional precision and tonal variation, characteristic of high-quality Kangxi-period blue and white porcelain, displaying confident brushwork, spatial depth and refined compositional balance. The tranquil landscape composition reflects the literati taste of the period and belongs to a rare group of dishes with closely related pictorial schemes.

A closely related example is preserved in the Hetjens Museum, Düsseldorf, catalogue no. 148, underscoring the rarity and institutional significance of this design.
