The plaque is finely carved from pale green jade with areas of russet inclusion. It is of rectangular form with a domed top and features an openwork design of stylised scrolls and archaistic motifs, centred by a circular aperture. The borders are carved with curling tendrils and zoomorphic elements, recalling archaic bronzes and earlier jade forms. The jade is softly polished, displaying natural variations in tone and minor calcification from age.

This type of openwork jade plaque was often worn as a pendant, suspended from clothing or belts, and carried auspicious connotations of protection and refinement. The circular aperture at the centre may allude to bi-disc symbolism, representing heaven and the unity between man and the cosmos.
