The pear-shaped (meiping) vase is finely potted with a gently rounded shoulder rising to a short waisted neck and everted rim. The body is vividly painted in underglaze cobalt blue with a dynamic five-clawed dragon shown in pursuit of a flaming pearl amidst stylised clouds and scrolling flames, an auspicious motif symbolising imperial authority, power, and cosmic harmony.

The shoulder is decorated with a band of upright lappets enclosing archaic scrolls beneath a key-fret border at the neck, while the lower body is framed by a further band of geometric panels above the foot. The vase stands on a slightly spreading foot with an unglazed base, revealing the buff firing surface.
