Each rectangular porcelain plaque is delicately painted in famille rose enamels with a different auspicious scene, framed in finely carved hardwood mounts.
Each scene is accompanied by inscriptions and artist seals, adding poetic resonance and connecting the imagery to literati traditions. The refined palette, with its soft pinks, greens, and purples, reflects the sophisticated famille rose enamel technique perfected in the Qing dynasty and revived during the Republic period.
Such plaque sets were popular for domestic display, offering auspicious blessings and decorative refinement to elite interiors.
The first plaque depicts a scholarly figure accompanied by an attendant, standing beneath a pine tree, symbolising steadfastness and longevity.
The second shows a pair of sparrows perched on bamboo stalks, emblematic of resilience and integrity.
The third depicts Budai, the Laughing Buddha, surrounded by children, conveying abundance, joy, and blessings.
The fourth portrays a floral and bird scene with chrysanthemums and a parrot, combining symbols of longevity, virtue, and good fortune.
