Carved in the round from wood and finished in gilt lacquer, the figure seated in meditation on a double-lotus base above a tiered hexagonal pedestal, the hands held before the chest in a teaching gesture. The serene face framed by pendulous ears, the hair arranged in a high chignon beneath an elaborate openwork crown, the body draped in flowing robes falling in elegant folds. The reverse with a shaped mandorla decorated with cloud scrolls.

This type of small-scale gilt-lacquered image, probably representing a Bodhisattva such as Kannon (Avalokiteśvara) or Amida in princely form, was made for use in a domestic altar (zushi) or a small temple niche. The style and construction — carved wood, separate pedestal, and applied gilt lacquer — are characteristic of late Edo period craftsmanship.

Condition Report:
Overall good condition with wear consistent with age and devotional use. Gilt lacquer with expected flaking and rubbing, particularly to high points. Minor age cracks to the wood. The figure and base appear original and associated; remnants of old paper inventory labels on the reverse.
