Carved from dark stone with traces of red pigment, the Buddha Vairocana is depicted seated in vajraparyanka (lotus posture) upon a double-lotus throne. His hands are held in dharmachakra mudrā (gesture of teaching), symbolising the turning of the Wheel of Dharma. He wears an ornate crown with floral medallion, beaded necklaces, armlets, and bracelets, in the manner of a crowned Buddha.

Flanking the central figure are two attendant Bodhisattvas, each standing on lotus bases with aureoles. Above, a pair of lions emerge from scrolling foliage, crowning the arched prabhāmaṇḍala. The background is decorated with auspicious emblems, including suspended stūpas. The base is richly carved with donor figures in adoration, alternating with mythical guardians.

The stone has developed a deep patina, its surface marked by centuries of worship and handling, lending the work a devotional presence.

Vairocana is considered the cosmic Buddha, embodiment of the dharmakāya (truth body), central in both Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. The iconography with the dharmachakra mudrā and crown reflects the esoteric Buddhist practices prevalent in the Kathmandu Valley, where Newar craftsmen maintained a continuous tradition of highly refined stone sculpture.
