A rare and finely constructed Chinese balance scale, comprising a tall brass upright with crossbeam and suspension fittings, complete with two circular metal pans suspended by cords. The scale is mounted on its original fitted hardwood box, the case fitted with brass mounts, hinges, escutcheon, and swing handles, and incorporating a sliding drawer for the storage of weights and accessories.

The scale exemplifies the refined functional design used by merchants and officials in late Qing dynasty China, where such instruments were essential for the accurate weighing of silver, coins, and commodities in commercial transactions. The slender, elegant proportions of the brass framework reflect both practical engineering and aesthetic restraint.

The wooden case shows a rich, warm patina from prolonged handling, with surface wear consistent with age and use, while the brass elements display an attractive oxidised surface
