Cast in bronze, the youthful god Kartikeya (also known as Skanda, or Murugan in South India) stands in samabhanga upon a stepped square pedestal. He is four-armed, his front hands in varada and abhaya mudrā, while the rear pair hold attributes, likely a spear (vel) and other emblems. He wears a conical headdress, necklaces, and a long dhoti falling in sharp pleats.

At his side stands his vahana, the peacock, crisply rendered with detailed plumage, its tail sweeping behind. The deity’s calm yet alert expression, together with the upright stance and companion bird, emphasises his role as the youthful god of war and commander of the celestial armies.

The bronze has developed a dark patina with traces of ritual handling and age.

Kartikeya is one of the most popular deities of South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, where he is venerated as Murugan. As son of Shiva and Parvati, and brother of Ganesha, he embodies martial power, divine beauty, and protection. His spear (vel) is both a weapon and symbol of wisdom.
