This exquisitely cast gilt bronze figure represents Nāmasaṅgīti Mañjuśrī, a highly esoteric form of the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī associated with the Nāmasaṅgīti ("Chanting the Names") tantra, one of the most profound and complex texts in the Vajrayāna Buddhist tradition. Regarded as the embodiment of all knowledge and wisdom, Nāmasaṅgīti is often depicted with multiple heads and arms, signifying omniscience and the all-encompassing nature of enlightened speech.
The figure sits in vajrāsana on a double-lotus pedestal, the central hands held in dharmacakra mudrā or a gesture of teaching, often associated with the transmission of the dharma, while the surrounding hands hold various attributes such as the lotus, sword, vajra, and bow—symbols of enlightened activity and Mañjuśrī’s ability to cut through ignorance. The facial expression is serene yet powerful, accentuated with cold gold painting and subtle red and blue pigment details.
The figure is adorned with a five-pointed crown, necklaces, earrings, and a sacred thread (upavīta), further emphasizing its divine and tantric nature.
This form of Mañjuśrī is particularly revered in advanced tantric practices and is believed to contain the essence of all the Buddha’s teachings in seed form. The Nāmasaṅgīti text itself, composed by the Buddha Vajradhara and revealed to Nāgārjuna, is often recited by tantric adepts for blessings, wisdom, and liberation.
Minor rubbing to gilding and some losses to polychromy; overall excellent condition with elegant wear from ritual handling and age.
