The composition presents a dramatic mountainous scene with towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and dense clusters of trees rendered with meticulous brushwork. At the lower section, a cluster of houses with tiled roofs nestles along the riverbank, their placement harmonizing human presence with the grandeur of nature. The brushwork combines textured strokes for rocks and cliffs with delicate washes of ink and subtle color for the trees and architecture.

In the upper left, an inscription in elegant calligraphy reflects the painter’s meditation on landscape:

"In my breast, the landscapes of Yunmeng are without end;
I combine them here through the hand of an old painter.
Often I regret not capturing the three supreme realms,
yet with brush and ink I set down what dwells within my heart."

Two red seals accompany the inscription: one square, the other rectangular. Both are carved in seal script (zhuanshu), their impression adding balance and authority to the composition, in keeping with literati convention.

The poem makes reference to Yunmeng (雲夢), a celebrated region of lakes and mountains in Hubei, often invoked in Chinese poetry as a symbol of boundless natural beauty and spiritual inspiration. By evoking Yunmeng, the artist situates his work within a lineage of literati painting where landscape is less a literal depiction than a poetic vision of the inner mind.

The painting embodies the enduring Chinese literati ideal, where mountains, water, and rustic dwellings symbolise retreat from worldly concerns and the search for harmony with the Dao. Its refined style and poetic inscription link it to the traditions of late Qing scholar-painters who continued the lineage of classical landscape art.
