Of rounded baluster form, painted in deep underglaze cobalt with an animated design of cranes in flight among ruyi-shaped clouds, the lively birds depicted in various poses, their wings outstretched or alighting amidst vaporous scrolls. A border of upright plantain leaves encircles the foot, the brushwork vigorous and assured, with washes of rich blue that have softened in places through age and firing.

The jar is fitted with a later wooden cover, finely carved with openwork scrolls, the central knop surmounted by a jade finial of pale tone. The motif of cranes soaring amidst clouds is emblematic of longevity and peace, a theme much favoured in the Ming dynasty and one which held auspicious resonance both within the domestic sphere and in diplomatic exchange.

The piece exudes the timeless elegance of Ming porcelain, the rounded body lending itself to the free movement of the design, while the overall impression is one of harmony and auspicious grace.
