The powerful guardian beast is shown recumbent upon a shaped base of swirling cloud scrolls, its massive head turned to the side with jaws open, baring fangs and tongue, the mane rendered in thickly curling locks. The muscular body, detailed with scales and flowing fur, is enlivened by a lively group of cubs clambering playfully across its limbs and back. Beneath one paw, the beast rests upon a pierced brocade ball, symbol of dominion and protection.

The composition is animated and full of vitality, the exaggerated facial expression and vigorous modeling typical of mid-20th century Chinese bronzework, executed in deliberate evocation of the grand Ming and Qing prototypes that once guarded temples and palaces. The surface shows remains of old patina with traces of gilding and polychromy now largely worn away, lending the group a dramatic, timeworn presence.
