Of monumental baluster form, cast in heavy bronze with a dark patina, each vase richly decorated in high relief with scenes of blossoming branches, dragons, and auspicious birds, the details carefully chased and worked to create a sense of movement and vitality. The shoulders are boldly modelled with applied handles in the form of coiling mythical beasts, their sinuous bodies extending across the surface, while the necks rise to flaring rims encircled by bands of archaistic motifs.

The workmanship is characteristic of the Meiji period, when Japanese bronzework reached a height of technical refinement and exuberant display, much of it destined for exhibition and export to Western collections. The sheer weight and robust presence of the vases suggest they were conceived as palace or temple ornaments, intended to impress with their scale and detail.
