Porcelain, painted in underglaze blue and overglaze iron-red and gilt.
The broad cavetto decorated with scrolling leafy stems issuing large chrysanthemum and peony blossoms, finely rendered in cobalt blue and iron-red, heightened with delicate gilding. The centre with a lobed medallion enclosing alternating diaper and foliate panels, reserved on a pale celadon-toned ground. The reverse plain, covered with a pale bluish glaze, with an unglazed footring showing firing marks and kiln grit.
This robust and well-balanced dish represents a fine example of Chinese Imari-style export porcelain, inspired by Japanese Arita wares but produced for the international market. The combination of strong cobalt blue, rich iron-red enamels and restrained gilding reflects the taste of the 18th century for bold yet elegant decorative schemes.
