(R) BALUSTER VASE KINGFISHER GLAZE QING DYNASTY CHINA

Dimensions: Height 19,1 cm Wide 10,6 cm Depth 10,6 cm
Weight: 554 grams

Of elegant pear-shaped form with tall cylindrical neck and gently everted lip, the body is entirely covered in a brilliant and variegated glaze of deep cobalt blue streaked with turquoise and suffused with mottled splashes of crimson, flowing downward in irregular rivulets to create a dynamic, flame-like effect. The glaze pools more thickly at the rounded lower body, thinning to reveal paler tones around the rim, while the unglazed footrim exposes the biscuit body beneath.

This striking glaze belongs to the celebrated repertoire of Qing monochromes, where daring experiments with color and glaze effects produced wares of exceptional brilliance. The present vase recalls the flambé and related Jun-inspired glazes perfected during the Kangxi and Yongzheng reigns and much admired throughout the Qing period. The intense contrast between crimson and kingfisher blue creates a vivid, almost painterly surface that captures the fascination of collectors then as now.
