Of generous size and finely potted, the dish is painted in a rich cobalt blue with a central medallion enclosing a lotus spray encircled by a wide band of floral cartouches, each filled with peony, chrysanthemum, prunus, and other auspicious blooms. The border is further decorated with bold scrolling lotus between bands of classic ornament, all executed with precision and clarity characteristic of the Kangxi kilns. The reverse similarly painted with simple floral sprays.
The elegant design, alternating between full blossoms and scrolling foliage, epitomises the taste of the Kangxi period, when blue-and-white porcelain attained a standard of refinement and balance much admired in both domestic and export markets. The quality of the cobalt and the clarity of the painting reveal the confident hand of the Jingdezhen workshops at the turn of the 18th century.
