Lacquered wood, decorated in gold and coloured hira-maki-e on a dark brown nashiji ground. The cabinet of rectangular form, opening to a pair of hinged doors enclosing six small drawers, above a long base drawer. The exterior doors each decorated with a pictorial panel, one depicting bamboo and rockwork, the other a rooster standing beside a rock, rendered with fine linework and subtle tonal gradation. The interior drawers variously decorated with floral sprays and auspicious motifs.

The surfaces enriched with scrolling borders and diaper patterns, the whole fitted with finely chased metal mounts, hinges, corner brackets and drawer pulls, contributing to both durability and visual balance. The restrained palette and elegant asymmetry are characteristic of Meiji-period lacquerwork, combining traditional Japanese decorative vocabulary with forms appealing to Western collectors in the late 19th century.

Such lacquer cabinets were produced for refined domestic use as well as for export, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Japanese lacquer workshops during the Meiji era.
