The wrathful deity Vajrapāṇi is cast standing in a dynamic pose, the left leg bent and the right extended, trampling upon a lotus base with broad petals. His muscular body is adorned with beaded necklaces, a snake belt, and a tiger-skin loincloth around the hips. The face is fierce, with bared teeth, bulging eyes, and flaming hair rising upward, surmounted by a crown of skulls.

In his right hand he raises the vajra (thunderbolt), emblem of indestructible power, while his left hand rests at his hip in tarjani mudrā (gesture of menace). His form is encircled by a flaming aureole, now partly broken, symbolising the fiery energy of enlightenment that destroys ignorance.

The surface is darkly patinated with areas of green encrustation, the details of the jewellery and facial features clearly defined despite ritual wear.

Vajrapāṇi, the “Bearer of the Thunderbolt,” is revered in Tibetan Buddhism as a protector and guardian of the Dharma. He embodies the power of all Buddhas, balancing the compassion of Avalokiteśvara and the wisdom of Mañjuśrī, thus completing the triad of principal bodhisattvas. His wrathful form protects practitioners from inner and outer obstacles, while his vajra symbolises the irresistible force of awakened mind.
