Carved from fine, translucent white jade, the piece is fashioned in the shape of a rhyton, inspired by archaic ritual vessels. The upper section is worked in the form of a stylized animal head, the curling horn sweeping downward to form the spout. Graceful scrolls and raised ridges define the features, with intricate spiral motifs incised on the lower body, recalling archaic leiwen (thunder patterns). The form is fluid and dynamic, the pale stone softly polished, with areas of subtle russet inclusions accentuating the carving.

Such rhyton-shaped jade carvings reflect the Qing dynasty’s fascination with archaism, reviving ancient bronze and jade prototypes while adapting them to the refined taste of the imperial court.
