(R) A HENAN BLACK-GLAZED VASE WITH SPLASH DECORATION, CHINA , EARLY MING DYNASTY

Dimensions: Height 19 cm Wide 17 cm Depth 17 cm
Weight: 1080 grams

The vase is of ovoid form with a short cylindrical neck and narrow lip. The stoneware body is covered in a lustrous black glaze, liberally splashed with russet-brown glaze that runs down the shoulders in bold, flame-like streaks. The glaze thins at the lower body to reveal the buff stoneware, pooling in a glossy finish around the base. The footring is left unglazed, showing the coarse clay typical of Henan kilns.

This type of striking splash-glazed ware represents a continuation of traditions developed in the Cizhou and Henan kilns during the Jin and Yuan periods, persisting into the early Ming dynasty. Such wares, with their dramatic contrasts of black and russet, were appreciated for their bold rustic aesthetic and often used for storage, wine, or ritual purposes.
