The painting shows a crane, its head bowed and beak pointing toward the ground, rendered with swift, expressive brushstrokes, beneath a pine branch that arcs into the pictorial space. The crane’s body is suggested with washes of ink and sparing detail, while its eye and beak are sharply defined, creating a dynamic tension between spontaneity and precision.

The crane and pine together form traditional emblems of longevity and resilience, recurring motifs in Zhu Da’s oeuvre. Executed with the artist’s characteristic eccentric brushwork and use of negative space, the composition reveals both the playful and the enigmatic qualities for which he is renowned.

Biographical note: Zhu Da, better known by his sobriquet Bada Shanren, was a Ming imperial descendant who became a Buddhist monk following the dynasty’s fall. His life as a recluse and his eccentric personality infused his art with layers of ambiguity, irony, and veiled political meaning. Today, Bada Shanren is celebrated as one of the most original painters and calligraphers of the early Qing dynasty, his bold brushwork and symbolic imagery deeply influencing later literati and modern Chinese art.
